Mondi was born and bred in South Africa.
As part of our South African roots, Mondi South Africa is committed to not only ensuring the wellbeing of our employees, but supporting the local communities around our mills, forests and manufacturing facilities too.
We have 5 CSI focus areas reaching different communities in our footprint and these are:
- Quality Education
- Health and Wellbeing
- Environment
- Resilient and sustainable human settlement
- Income generating and employment
Our programmes reach thousands of people, orphans, students, social workers, rural children and other partners in education and government. The focus areas cover promotion of healthy lifestyles, food and security nutrition, protection of the poor and vulnerable and improved access to the world of work.
Why Buy Local?
Because when you do you enable a South African-born company to enable South Africans. From education to internships to employment, Mondi ensures it looks after the communities they work in. Meet Bongumusa Mabaso, just one of many recipients of the varied Mondi South Africa CSI programmes.
Bongumusa touches on two Mondi South Africa programmes, first is the favourite among children, Chrismas Box, which benefits around 1 600 orphans and vulnerable children. They receive a Christmas box from Mondi annually and these children are identified in our footprint in collaboration with OVC Programmes, social workers, community liaison forums etc. The second programme Bongumusa touches on is our Rural Education Access Programme which reaches more than a hundred rural children who have received bursaries through Mondi and other partners in education.
Mondi South African Sustainability
If you want to go fast, go alone.
If you want to go far, go together.
– African proverb
Paper Is Our Life
Forests are the second largest global stores of carbon. We manage ours sustainably and locally, focusing on water, soils, biodiversity and social value of our production landscapes.
We have reduced our total freshwater consumption in our South African mills by 8% and our specific water consumption in our Richards Bay mill by 4% from 2015 to 2018. This has been achieved mainly by implementing closed loops and increased recycling of water used in our processes. As of April 2018, approximately 67% of our conservation area network was in a ‘maintained’ state.
Mondi Rotatrim is an A4 office paper that is whiter, brighter and locally produced in South Africa and exported out to the world. Our HQ may now be abroad, but it all started here in South Africa and of that we are very proud.

Empowering Future Leadership
Many young South Africans live in marginalised areas where unemployment, lack of education and crime rates are high. Mondi South Africa’s INGWE initiative aims to provide opportunities for young people by encouraging positive relationships and strengthening their leadership skills. Mondi’s community development facilitators have been trained in basic youth work and mentoring skills to act as mentors.
Social activities include sports tournaments, spelling and debating clubs, after school classes, environmental protection and participation in local decision-making, all designed to steer young people away from crime and violence and help them develop life and work skills.
